Last 24 hours brings surge in Juárez virus deaths as cases near 1,000

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico -- After a surprising Monday that saw no new coronavirus deaths or cases in the city of Juárez, Tuesday's reporting from Chihuahua state health leaders reflected a significant spike.

The number of Juárez deaths jumped by 19 and cases by 33 on Tuesday. That brought the fatality total to 229 and the infections total to 942.

The city of Juárez accounted for all of the new deaths recorded Tuesday in the state of Chihuahua, whose death toll reached 282. There were 72 new cases statewide for a tally of 1,565 to date.

The Ministry of Health said in its latest epidemiological report that there were 391 recovered cases in the state, with 224 of those recoveries involving Juárez residents.
