‘It’s a matter of seconds’: Tips to keep your children safe in the pool this summer

KVIA

EL PASO, Texas -- Triple-digit temperatures are upon us and if you plan on hitting the pool you'll need to stay extra vigilant to keep your kids safe.

Here are some tips to keep in mind the summer courtesy of the Drowning Coalition of El Paso:

  • Try to install a fence with a lock around your backyard pool.
  • Make sure your kids never swim alone.
  • Try and teach them that the pool is off limits unless a parent is with them.
  • Try to stay away from arm floats and tubes. If your child cant swim, make sure your child is wearing a life vest thats approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • Learn CPR if you can
  • Have a first aid kit
  • Know your child's swimming abilities

If you can, try to sign your child up and yourself for swimming lessons. There are pools across the Borderland offering classes.
