FORT BLISS, Texas -- The annual Memorial Day ceremony at Fort Bliss National Cemetery saw changes to tradition, much like occurred at Arlington National Cemetery, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Normally thousands of people would be present at Fort Bliss to personally view the ceremony paying tribute to fallen soldiers.

But this year the ceremony wasn't open to the general public; the playing of taps and firing of the canon took place without many being able to see it in person.

Nonetheless, cemetery officials said it remained an inspiring and solemn occasion to pay respect to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

A Las Cruces soldier recently killed in a combat operation in Afghanistan was among those remembered at the Fort Bliss ceremony. You can learn more about Sgt. 1st Class Antonio Rey Rodriquez by clicking here.
