Man who led police on a chase, SWAT standoff in Las Cruces identified

UPDATE (04/01): Las Cruces police identified a man involved in SWAT standoff Thursday as David Chavez Jr. Police say Chavez ran from police after a traffic stop with a firearm. Police officers ran after Chavez. The chase led them through a residential area, day care, church and school.

Chavez was eventually found at 2100 Enzie Drive.

Chavez was charged with receiving stolen property and resisting, evading or obstructing a police officer.

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- A man wanted by police hid in a shed, sparking a standoff with SWAT officers in Las Cruces Thursday.

It happened in an area near Thomas Drive and Rentfrow.

University Hills Elementary School used safety protocols during the incident. All children were released from the school safely.

Las Cruces police say there was no danger to the public.
