Driving safe amid possible flooding in New Mexico

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KVIA) -- Brace for impact as we are tracking some of the heaviest rains so far this monsoon season. According to the National Weather Service, El Paso and Las Cruces could see between a quarter and a half inch of rain starting Tuesday.

That amount of rain a small amount of time could lead to flash floods in low-lying areas.

On Tuesday afternoon, access to some roads near New Mexico State University in Las Cruces have been limited.

With certain roads unable to drain fast, drivers had to take an abundance of caution on the road.

New Mexico Department of Transportation Officer Ami Evans said drivers should consider these tips as the rain carries on for the next few days.

He suggested carrying rain gear like a raincoat and umbrella in your vehicle. Additionally, he said drivers should avoid driving toward pools of water.

"You just never know. With these New Mexico rainstorms, that could really come in handy. I know I'm going to be on the road the next few days, and that's something I plan on taking with me as well as an umbrella," Evans said.
