Police and fire crews at the scene of a cell phone battery explosion that injured several people at a school in Katy, Texas.

KATY, Texas — Some junior high students in Texas were hurt after a cell phone battery exploded on Friday.

A Katy Independent School District spokesperson said it happened at Mayde Creek Junior High.

A dozen students were taken to hospitals for treatment, with most suffering smoke inhalation. Officials said their injuries were not serious.

It was unclear exactly what caused the explosion, although fire department officials called it battery failure.
