Johnny Depp wins defamation case; Heard also awarded damages

MGN

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Jury has reached verdicts in Johnny Depp's libel lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard, along with her counterclaim.

Jurors found that both Depp and Heard were liable for defamation.

Depp, who was not present at the hearing, was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Heard was also awarded $2 million in compensatory damages, but no award in punitive damages.

The reading of the verdict, scheduled for 1 pm MDT, was initially delayed when Judge Azcarate sent the jury back into recess to properly complete the compensatory damage forms.

Heard released a statement, expressing she's heartbroken that "the evidence still was not strong enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of [her] ex-husband."

Depp did not immediately release a statement.
