Sunland Park man charged with human smuggling after cross-town El Paso chase
EL PASO, Texas -- A Sunland Park man was arrested and charged with human smuggling after leading law enforcement on a chase across El Paso, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Texas DPS says 22-year-old Carlos R. Casillas-Reyes led Texas Highway Patrol on the chase Monday, veering into the wrong side of traffic on two separate occasions.
DPS officials say special agents working as part of Operation Lone Star reported suspicious activity involving Casillas-Reyes to Highway Patrol.
When a Texas Trooper attempted to stop the 22-year-old for undisclosed traffic violations, investigators say Casillas-Reyes refused to stop. The pursuit began at Artcraft and Upper Valley Road. Investigators say the pursuit continued with the driver veering into the wrong side of the road twice and driving through a fence from a business off Airway Boulevard.
The trooper used his vehicle to perform a PIT maneuver to stop Casillas-Reyes.
Casillas-Reyes was arrested and charged with human smuggling. The passenger, a US citizen, was released without charges. Two undocumented migrants were found in the car and released to US Border Patrol custody.
