John Drugan School receives a $10,000 technology grant after teacher wins Rack Room Shoes’ nationwide Teacher of the Year Contest

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The John Drugan School in the Socorro Independent School District received today a $10,000 technology grant from Rack Room Shoes after sixth-grade science teacher, Ricardo Mendez, was named one of five winners of the company's nationwide Teacher of the Year Contest.

Melissa Carrillo, mother of a sixth-grader at John Drugan School, nominated Mendez earlier this year after being asked by Rack Room Shoes' text alerts to nominate her favorite teacher of the year.

Mendez described winning the contest as a great privilege and a blessing.

"All of you are my inspiration. You make my work so rewarding. I just want to thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey", Mendez told his students as he received the recognition.

Mendez also received a $500 Rack Room Shoes gift card for personal use as part of being selected Teacher of the Year.
