SAN ELIZARIO, Texas (KVIA) -- The Texas State Artist Committee named San Elizario artist Gaspar Enriquez the 2023 Texas State Artist - Two-Dimensional.

Enriquez says he was working on an art piece when he received the news. The office of State Representative Mary E. Gonzalez says Enriquez's works are inspired by Mexican American and Chicano culture.

"He draws on the stories of his people to create powerful portraits of artists and friends that have been a source of inspiration for him," a news release from Gonzalez's office states. "Through his work, he hopes to bring attention to the injustices faced by Mexican Americans and other minority groups in the United States. His art is a reflection of his commitment to social justice, as well as a celebration of his roots."

Every year the Texas State Artist Committee names a musician, poet, 2D visual artist, and 3D visual artist to represent the state.

"Gaspar’s selection also further enhances the reputation of the San Elizario’s Historical Art District, where he works," State Representative Gonzalez told ABC-7.
