Local pit masters compete for a shot at the golden ticket and prizes

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) - Six teams from the El Paso area participated in a three event competition for the title of Best BBQ.

It was all part of the Famous Dave's Nationwide All-Stars BBQ Championship sponsored by World Food Championships.

The 11th Annual Event was the first time El Paso hosted the competition.

New and experienced pit masters agreed on what makes good BBQ.

"All I know is that we put our love and heart into it, I'm pretty sure everyone else does as well but, we try to take it to the next level," said Jay Martinez representing Mad Street BBQ from Las Cruces, NM.

"It's my first time and we are just hoping to represent," says Juan Hildago, first time competitor. "More of a learning experience like i say we never competed or anything so more than anything its learning."

The teams were expected to present a pork entre, a chicken entre and a wild card entre.

A Golden Ticket to the next tier in the national competition was at stake. There was also a $5,000 prize purse.
