El Paso Police say woman died after accidentally choking while driving on I-10

Update (July 22, 2024): El Paso Police say Melendez' cause of death was ruled an accidental choking.

They did not provide any additional information on what led up to Melendez's death.

The cause of death was determined by the Medical Examiner's Office.

ABC-7 is working to learn more information.


Update: Special Traffic Investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash. Officials identified the driver as 51-year-old Gala Melendez, who died at the hospital after the crash.

Investigators say Melendez was traveling east on I-10 near the Executive Center Boulevard exit when she hit the center median "for unknown reasons."


EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) - El Paso Police respond to I-10 east and Executive after a one vehicle crash.

It happened just before 12:40 a.m. Sunday.

The crash caused serious injuries, and members of the Special Traffic Investigation unit were at the scene to determine the cause of the crash.

The identity of the driver or those who suffered injuries has not been reported by police, as the investigation continues.
