Riverside baseball prepares for Stephenville in round of 16 series

EL PASO, Texas - The Riverside Rangers are hoping their playoff run will continue for at least one more weekend.

The Rangers find themselves in the sweet 16 of the Class 4A baseball playoffs.

The only team from El Paso left standing in the playoffs.

Friday, Riverside will face Stephenville in game one of the best-of-three series.

Game two and three (if necessary) are scheduled for Saturday.

The series will be played at Midland College in Midland, TX.

If the Rangers are able to get past this round, they will advance to the elite 8 of the tournament.

It was back in 2000 when Riverside's baseball team made it all the way to the final four.

Riverside head coach Rick Solis knows this year's squad is special.

Even when the game isn't going their way, the Rangers are always able to find a way.

"The confidence level is there," Solis said. "I don't see us losing that confidence as far as mentally, we should be ready to go."

For senior outfielder Derek Nevarez, it's been a fun ride so far, but the Rangers are far from finished.

"We've just been making history lately," Nevarez said. "Being the only team left, it will be a pretty good approach for us and we haven't been to the elite 8, final four in over 20 years, and so it would mean something big for us."
