Austin HS tabs Ysleta assistant Rick Sapien new boys’ basketball coach

EL PASO, Texas - The Ysleta Boys' Basketball team's incredible 2020-21 season run continues to pay off, as one of the team assistants is getting a promotion elsewhere.

Rick Sapien, who has been an assistant on the Indians' bench, has been hired as the next Head Boys' Basketball Coach at Austin High School and was introduced on Monday afternoon.

Sapien, an El Paso native, helped lead the Indians to their best finish in school last season. Ysleta advanced to the UIL State Sweet 16, where they eventually lost to El Paso city champion Chapin 76-41.

Now, Sapien will see Chapin twice a year in district play with the Panthers.

Austin finished with a record of 14-6 last season before falling to Bel-Air in the Bi-District playoffs. Sapien replaces Stacey Spencer, who retired after a long run as the Panthers' head coach.
