El Paso Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2023: Larry Vucan

EL PASO, Texas - Larry Vucan has never shied away from challenge.

When he took over the baseball program at Southlake Carroll High School, Vucan knew he'd be able to find success.

Vucan is from El Paso, and this upcoming June he will be inducted into the El Paso Athletics Hall of Fame, Class of 2023.

A graduate of Eastwood High School, Vucan would start his coaching career in El Paso leading two of the city's programs, Bel Air and Franklin.

In 2016, he was named the head baseball coach at South Lake Carroll, a school located in a suburb of Dallas.

He immediately found success, leading the South Lake Carroll Dragons to winning records and three state championships.

The Dragons won back-to-back state titles in 2019 and 2020.

Their most recent state championship came last season in 2022.

Following that 2022 state title victory, Vucan was named the National Coach of the Year.

This season, Vucan's Dragons saw an early exit from the playoffs after falling to Americas in the area round of the playoffs.

It wasn't the way he wanted his team's season to end, but he was happy for Americas, a team from his hometown.

Now Vucan is looking forward to June 28 when he will be inducted into the El Paso Athletics Hall of Fame.

"Very grateful, humbled by the opportunity," Vucan said. "All the years that I've spent there (El Paso), and to kind of have the fruit of your work be recognized it's just very humbling for sure."
