UTEP women’s basketball add WJCAC Defensive Player of the Year Delma Zita

EL PASO, Texas - UTEP women’s basketball has signed New Mexico Junior College transfer Delma Zita, head coach Keitha Adams announced Friday. Zita was named the 2022-23 WJCAC Defensive Player of the Year and will represent Mozambique this summer at the AfroBasket Championships in Rwanda.  

Zita will have two years of eligibility left with the Miners.

Played two seasons with New Mexico JC, making 61 starts over 62 appearances ... averaged 10.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 3.2 steals per game ... shot 45.5 percent from the field ... racked up multiple accolades for the 2022-23 season, earning Co-Defensive Player of the Year as well as receiving All-Conference and All-Region honors ... posted double-digit scoring efforts 17 times, including two games with at least 20 points ... poured in 25 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and six steals at Midland College (2/09/23) ... scored 20 against Odessa College (01/07/23) ... put up 17 points and five steals at South Plains College (02/16/23) ... was close to a double-double at Clarendon College with nine points and a season-best eight assists … in first season with NMJC, scored in double-figures 13 times, including four straight contests to start the campaign ... nearly had a triple-double against Community Christian College (11/21/21), dropping a career high in points (32) and assists (11) while matching a career best with nine steals ... stuffed the stat sheet with 19 points, five rebounds, seven assists and four steals at Iowa Western CC (11/26/21) ... scored 18 to go with seven assists against Odessa College (01/27/22) ... put up 16 points and had eight steals against Oklahoma JV (11/11/21) ... as a freshman at Seward County CC during the 2020-21 season, averaged 6.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game in 22 appearances ... shot 86.4 percent from the charity stripe ... scored in double-figures four times, including three games in a row down the stretch ... dropped 12 points, seven assists and four steals in a blowout win at Neosho County CC (03/11/21) ... put up 11 points and three rebounds at Coffeyville CC (02/06/21) ... poured in 11 points  to go with four assists at Pratt CC (03/13/21) ... scored 10 and added four rebounds, two assists, and three steals at Barton CC (03/15/21).

She is very skilled with the ball and will create a lot of easy opportunities for her teammates. We are excited about her speed and leadership on the court.
