UTEP’s Oguntimehin named MWC Defensive Player of the Week

EL PASO, Texas - The Mountain West announced its Old Trapper Women's Volleyball Players of the Week on Monday, with UTEP's Luvina Oguntimehin earning Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The award marks the first conference weekly honor of Oguntimehin’s career and makes her the second Miner to earn a Mountain West weekly award this season.

Oguntimehin helped UTEP open the week with a four-set battle to Arizona before bouncing back to open Mountain West play with a 2-0 series sweep of Wyoming, earning a straight-set victory in the conference opener and a 3-1 win to close the weekend.

The Conroe, Texas, native was dominant defensively throughout the week, starting all three matches and playing all 11 sets. Oguntimehin totaled 19 blocks, including five solo and 14 assisted, while averaging 1.73 blocks per set.

She recorded 14 blocks in two matches against Wyoming, averaging 2.00 per set while helping UTEP establish an early presence at the net in its first conference weekend. Against Arizona, Oguntimehin added five blocks.

Offensively, Oguntimehin delivered an impressive performance, tallying 34 kills (3.09 per set) while hitting .347. She finished the week with a team-high 46.0 points, averaging 4.18 points per set.

Against Arizona, Oguntimehin recorded 12 kills, hit .419, and totaled 14.5 points.

She followed with a dominant two-match performance at Wyoming, totaling 22 kills while hitting .385.

Her 31.5 points against the Cowgirls led all Miners, as she averaged 4.50 points per set during the series sweep.
