Motorist clings to life after rollover on I-10 at Transmountain; speed blamed

UPDATE, July 6: A man remained hospitalized Tuesday following a rollover crash the day prior on I-10 west at Transmountain that police initially said had resulted in his death.

22–year-old Abel Isaac Ortiz was listed in critical condition at University Medical Center with life-threatening head injuries.

Investigators said Ortiz was speeding in his Jeep on Monday morning when he rear-ended a semi-truck; the impact of the crash flipped the Jeep over onto a dirt embankment and ejected Ortiz.

The truck driver wasn't hurt in the collision, which shut down the interstate for six hours, police said.

ORIGINAL REPORT, July 5: EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- El Paso police said one person was killed in a rollover crash on I-10 West near Transmountain.

It happened just after 5 a.m. Monday morning.

I-10 is closed between Artcraft and Transmountain.

Police have not released any additional information.
