MESQUITE, New Mexico -- An El Paso teenager was struck by a Jeep and killed early Thursday while trying to run across Interstate 10 near Mesquite, south of Las Cruces.

Andrew Gutierrez, 18, was hit in the middle lane of the westbound interstate near mile post 153 about 5:15 a.m., according to the New Mexico State Police.

The teen died at the scene and investigators said they don't know why he was attempting to cross the highway on foot.
