Man struck by pickup truck, killed at northeast El Paso intersection

EL PASO, Texas -- A man was struck by a pickup truck and killed Friday night at a northeast El Paso intersection.

Police on Saturday identified the victim as 32-year old Steven Lee Matthews.

Matthews was crossing the street when he was hit in the 7600 block of Diana at Vulcan around 8 p.m. Friday, according to investigators.

Police said Matthews was rushed to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries; he died at the hospital a short time later.

There was no word as to whether the pickup driver, identified by police as 48-year-old Jesus Barrios, would face any charges in the death.

Matthews was the city's 15th traffic fatality of the year. Police records show there were only nine roadway deaths last year at the same time.
