85-year-old man dies after being struck by car just a block from home in far east El Paso

EL PASO, Texas -- An 85-year-old El Paso man has died at a local hospital after being struck by a car late Tuesday night, authorities said.

Police on Wednesday identified the victim as Marco Antonio Menier and indicated he died just a block away from his home.

He was hit in the 1800 block of Desert Sun Drive near Carlos Bombach Avenue in far east El Paso about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigators wrote that "Menier began to cross the roadway at an un-designated crossing area" when he was struck.

Menier was rushed to the hospital from the scene with life-threatening injuries, but didn't survive.

It was the latest in a spate of deadly and near-deadly traffic incidents in recent days across the Borderland that has now left six people dead and seventh clinging to life in the hospital.

Menier's death marked the 30th traffic fatality of the year in El Paso, according to police data. There were 26 deaths at this time last year.
