Woman walking with brother struck, killed by car in northeast El Paso

EL PASO, Texas -- A woman walking with her brother along a northeast El Paso roadway was struck and killed by a car on Sunday night, authorities said.

It happened about 8:15 p.m. at the intersection of 6400 block of Mohair and Cougar.

Police on Monday identified the victim as 28–year-old Jazmin Renteria of El Paso.

Investigators said Renteria was struck and died when the car's driver "turned back to look" at a 3-year-old child in the car with him.

"At this time pedestrians in the roadway and driver inattention are factors in this collision," said Officer Adrian Cisneros, but he did not indicate whether the driver would face any charges stemming from the deadly incident.

Renteria's death is the 41st traffic fatality of the year thus far, police said, which is significantly higher compared to the 31 deaths at this time a year ago.
