Driver not wearing seat belt is critically hurt in east El Paso crash

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- El Paso police said a driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a crash on the east side early Wednesday morning.

44–year-old Elizabeth Ann Rodriguez was listed in critical condition at University Medical Center with severe head trauma. Police indicated she was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.

Investigators said the collision at the intersection of Viscount and Hawkins happened when Rodriguez rad a red light and her car crashed into another vehicle.

The driver of the car struck, 55–year old Cynthia Ann Mercado, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police said they also believe alcohol was a "contributing factor" in the crash, but did not indicate if any charges would be filed.
