24-year-old man hit by car, killed on U.S. 54; witnesses sought

EL PASO, Texas -- A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and killed early Sunday in central El Paso and police put out a public call seeking witnesses to the deadly incident.

Traffic investigators were summoned about 3 a.m. to the scene at U.S. 54 and Montana Avenue, where authorities indicated a 24-year-old man had been fatally hit about a half hour earlier by a Silver Nissan as he walked along the highway.

Police identified the victim as Sergio Alberto Banda of El Paso, saying he died at the scene as the Nissan fled southbound on U.S. 54.

Police, in a statement issued later Sunday, asked "anyone with information or that witnessed this fatally to call 915-832-4400. To remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 915-566-TIPS (8477)."

The death was the 27th traffic fatality this year in El Paso, compared to 30 at this same time last year, according to police records.
