Dad killed, young kids hurt when car crashes into tree in west El Paso

UPDATE, June 7: Police on Monday identified a 30-year-old El Paso father as the motorist killed in a west El Paso car crash over the weekend, and said the man's 4-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son were injured.

Investigators said Alonso Cervantes was killed when he lost control of his car in the 900 block of Mesa Hills early Saturday, left the the roadway and struck a tree.

Cervantes' young daughter wasn't restrained in the rear seat and was seriously inured, police said, while his son suffered minor injuries.

Authorities said Cervantes was El Paso's 29th traffic fatality of year compared to 31 deaths at this time last year.

ORIGINAL REPORT, June 5: EL PASO, Texas -- One person was killed and two others were injured in a single-car crash early Saturday in west El Paso.

Traffic investigators were summoned to the scene around 3 a.m. at S. Mesa Hills Drive and Bluff Ridge Drive.

Police said all three victims were in a lone vehicle that crashed; one died at the scene while the injured pair were rushed to a local hospital.

No further details were immediately available from authorities.
