2 El Paso police officers among 4 hurt in Lower Valley crash

UPDATE, July 20: Authorities said two El Paso police officers were among four people injured in a late night traffic crash involving two vehicles on North Loop in the Lower Valley.

Officials on Tuesday said also said the driver of the other vehicle that collided with the police cruiser would face charges stemming from the wreck.

Investigators indicated 26–year-old Jonathan Herrera ran a stop light at the intersection of North Loop and Lancaster Drive on Monday night and was struck by the police unit, which had the right of way.

The police car then skidded across all lanes of traffic and crashed into a rock wall, authorities said.

Herrera and his passenger, 26–year old Mark Martinez, along with the two officers in the squad car were all taken to Del Sol Medical Center for treatment of various injuries.

Herrera and Martinez remained hospitalized Tuesday in serious condition. The officer driving the patrol unit was treated and released for minor injuries, while the passenger officer suffered a fractured femur and was still hospitalized on Tuesday.

The names of the officers weren't released by authorities.
