3 hurt in far east El Paso crash caused by wrong-way driver

UPDATE, Aug. 22: El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies confirmed Sunday that a wrong-way driver caused a three-car crash in the 14000 block of Montana late Saturday that injured all three motorists.

A vehicle heading westbound in eastbound lanes of travel collided with two other vehicles about 9:30 p.m., officials said, trapping all three drivers in their cars and requiring extrication to free them.

The three motorists suffered extensive injuries in the crash and were taken to area hospitals, with two of them listed in serious condition.

There was no immediate word from deputies about what charges the wrong-way driver would face; authorities said Sunday afternoon that the collision remained under investigation.

ORIGINAL REPORT, Aug. 21: EL PASO, Texas — A serious traffic crash shut down a portion of Montana Avenue in far east El Paso County late Saturday night.

Sheriff’s deputies closed the 14000 block of Montana eastbound between 10:15 p.m. Saturday and 2:40 a.m. Sunday, advising motorists to use an alternate route.

Deputies didn’t provide further details, but an ABC-7 crew at the scene observed that the crash involved three vehicles, two sedans and an SUV, one of which appeared to be traveling the wrong way.

Rescue crews extricated at least two crash victims at the scene, according to witnesses.

There was no immediate word on the extent of their injuries.
