Alleged hit-and-run driver arrested for east El Paso Christmas Day crash that killed motorcyclist

UPDATE, Dec. 30: El Paso police on Thursday said they had arrested the car driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash with a motorcyclist on Christmas Day in east El Paso along George Dieter at Rex Baxter.

64-year-old Carmen Ofelia De Los Santos of El Paso was jailed on a charge of accident involving death. She was being held on $150,000 bond.

UPDATE, Dec. 26: Police on Sunday said a Christmas Day traffic wreck in east El Paso that killed a motorcyclist was a case of a hit-and-run, with a woman driving a car that hit the motorcyclist fleeing the scene.

Authorities identified the victim as Laramie Fowler, 24, of northeast El Paso.

In a report on a deadly crash at George Dieter and Rex Baxter, police wrote that Fowler was speeding in the moments leading up to his death, but added: "Investigators believe the motorcyclist tried to avoid the car when the car turned in front of him by laying down the bike. The unknown vehicle struck the motorcyclist as he was sliding on the roadway... Investigators learned the female exited her vehicle walked around her car then fled the location."

Police said the woman who fled was wearing a green sweater and driving a dark-colored vehicle. Investigators asked anyone with information on the woman's identity to contact police at 915-832-4400 or call Crimestoppers anonymously at 915-566-8477.

The deadly hit-and-run was the 75th El Paso traffic fatality of the year compared to 68 deaths a year ago at this same time.

ORIGINAL REPORT, Dec. 25: EL PASO, Texas -- A motorcyclist was killed in a Christmas Day crash with another vehicle in east El Paso.

The deadly wreck happened at George Dieter and Rex Baxter around 4:45 p.m.

Traffic investigators were summoned to the scene to determine what led up to the crash, and officers closed off George Dieter, starting at Vista Del Sol, to motorists.

It was the second traffic fatality of the Christmas holiday weekend thus far in El Paso. The other involved a rollover crash at Gateway East and Burgundy on Christmas Eve.
