Socorro ISD Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election

KVIA/File

The Socorro Independent School District (SISD) Board of Trustees has unanimously approved putting a Voter-Approved Tax Ratification Election (VATRE) on the November 3, 2026 ballot.

According to the Super Intendent of Socorro ISD James Vasquez, the proposed tax increase aims to generate about $49 million annually to address rising costs and state funding gaps, supporting teacher pay, student programs, and school safety.

If approved, the average SISD homeowner would pay roughly $10 more per month in taxes, though seniors and disabled homeowners with exemptions would not see an increase.

What you will see on the ballot:

"THIS IS A TAX INCREASE. "Ratifying the ad valorem tax rate of $1.0505 per $100 valuation in the Socorro Independent School District for the current year, a rate that will result in an increase of 18.13 percent in maintenance and operations tax revenue for the District for the current year as compared to the preceding year, which is an additional $17,341,476.00."
