ABC-7 First Alert: Cold front brings strong winds, dangerous wind chills

FirstAlert-375x225

The ABC-7 First Alert continues as a strong cold front brings windy conditions, colder temperatures, and wintry weather to some locations.

The winds started to pick up early Wednesday morning with gusts near 50 mph at the El Paso International Airport, the winds will continue throughout the day peaking near 55 mph in El Paso, and near 60 mph in Las Cruces. The National Weather Service has extended the High Wind Warning through 5:00 pm for the entire area.

As the cold front moves through the area the Sacramento Mountains are expected to see additional snowfall. I have about a 10 percent chance for showers in El Paso, and a 20 percent chance for showers in Las Cruces. We can't rule the chance of flurries out if it gets cold enough. I think the system will begin to move out around lunchtime.

Afternoon highs will reach the upper 40s and 50s but the wind chill will make it feel colder outside. Temperatures will drop well below freezing tonight across the region, teens and 20s for most of the region.

With temperatures this cold, it is a good time to refresh on the four P's:

  • People
  • Pets
  • Pipes
  • Plants
