SANTA FE, N.M. (KVIA) -- Friday, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham welcomed governor-elect Deb Haaland to start planning a smooth transition of power.

Tuesday, Haaland defeated her Republican opponent, Gregg Hull. Her victory made history as the first Native American woman elected governor of any U.S. state.

"I'm also excited to build off the accomplishments of this current administration with investments in health care, affordable housing, and general affordability for New Mexico families across the state," Haaland said.

Friday's press conference with Gov. Lujan Grisham and Haaland marked the first time the pair met since Election Day.

"She's going to do more than just shake your hand. I've seen her career from the very beginning to the highest places in federal government, and I've seen her deliver. They're not just New Mexicans. I've seen her deliver for Americans. This is an exciting place," Gov. Lujan Grisham said.

Haaland will be New Mexico's 33rd governor.
