Ethics complaint against El Paso Rep. Brian Kennedy withdrawn

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The ethics complaint filed against El Paso District 1 Representative Brian Kennedy has been withdrawn.

El Pasoan Deborah Paz, who filed the complaint, accused Kennedy of exceeding his authority as chairman of the Financial Oversight and Audit Committee.

Paz cited her concern about the impartiality of the ethics commission as the reason for her complaint withdrawal.

The city had scheduled a hearing for Paz's complaint for next Monday.

In her request to withdraw the complaint against Kennedy, Paz says there are several issues with the ethics committee that need to be addressed, including biased conduct by commission chairman Casey Williams, unequal treatment of city representatives who appeared before the committee to discuss their use of city-issued gas cards, and lack of due process.

City Attorney Karla Nieman will hold a meeting this coming Monday to discuss possible amendments to the city's ethics code.
