Bentonville (KHBS) — According to Arkansas State Police (ASP), Dominick Matt, 17, of Bentonville was shot, killed by a Bentonville police officer Friday evening.
Saturday morning, ASP released a press release that said the shooting is now under investigation.
The press release said the officer was in the area of Greenhouse Road and SW Briar Creek Avenue searching for a suspect involved in the attempted robbery at a nearby Kum and Go gas station.
ASP said, at 11:23 p.m. Matt was seen walking in the area of the store and was approached by the officer. The release said Matt allegedly brandished a handgun, leading the officer to shoot Matt. The officer was not injured.
State police said while Matt is believed to have been the person who attempted the robbery, the scope of the state police investigation is “limited to the use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer as defined under Arkansas law.”
Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division will investigate and present findings to the Benton County Prosecuting Attorney, who will determine whether the use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer was consistent with Arkansas law.
The Arkansas State Crime Lab will complete an autopsy to determine the manner and cause of Matt’s death.
Evidence recovered during the investigation will be analyzed at the crime lab.
