‘It gives you a sense of hopelessness’: Borderland homeless population prepares for another deep freeze
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- With Tuesday night expected to be the coldest of the year so far, the region's homeless population prepares for another night in the freezing temperatures.
"It's a drag," said Wayne Marshall, who is originally from Denver, but currently living on the streets of Las Cruces. "It gives you a sense of hopelessness."
According to ABC-7's StormTrack weather team, temperatures are expected to drop to the low twenties overnight.
"There are those that will not come in, regardless of what they know," said Henry Young, the executive director of the Las Cruces Gospel Rescue Mission. "That group that wants to stay away from anything that smacks of authority or being responsible for anything but themselves."
Marshall told ABC-7 that he will seek shelter during the most cold nights.
"It's good to have the opportunity to come here and utilize a bed space," he said.
With the freezing temperatures, the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope in Las Cruces is out of gloves. The facility, located at 999 W. Amador Avenue, is accepting donations during business hours, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
