New judge assigned to Moises Galvan murder case, sets September trial date
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- A new judge has been appointed to oversee the murder trial of Moises Galvan. This is the third judge assigned to the case since the alleged crime more than 6 years ago.
Galvan is accused of murdering R.J. Franco at an East El Paso bar in 2017. He claims that he shot Franco in self-defense. He has remained in jail since being arrested shortly after the shooting.
Galvan has already gone to trial, but that ended in a mistrial in 2019. The judge that presided over that mistrial was later investigated by the state for his handing of the case. He eventually recused himself.
Last week, when the second judge assigned to the case was still presiding, both Galvan's defense attorney Greg Anderson and Assistant District Attorney John Briggs asked that the trial date be set for the fall of 2023.
This morning newly assigned Judge Dick Alcala presided over a hearing for the case. He scheduled the trial for September 18, 2023.
