Zimbabwe police arrest 41 election monitors as votes are counted after widespread delays

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Zimbabwe police have arrested 41 workers for poll monitoring groups and accused them of attempting to distort the results of the country’s widely delayed presidential election to favor the opposition. The arrests occurred Thursday as vote counting continued in many parts of the country after President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is seeking a second term, used his presidential powers to extend balloting at dozens of polling stations for a second day. Some people shoved and shouted at election officials and police officers after being told that ballot papers had run out. The main opposition candidate, Nelson Chamisa, says the delays were aimed at disenfranchising voters in his urban strongholds.
