McGee To Be Sentenced Friday

LAS CRUCES, NM – Judge Robert Robles decided lateWednesday afternoon that Carissa McGee – the Las Cruces teen who pleaded no contest to trying to kill her mother and sister – will be sentenced as an adult.

McGee – a former Mayfield high school basketball standout – was 16 years old when she stabbed her mother Anita 20 times, and her sister Marie 15 times in March 2006.

Judge Robles heard emotional testimony earlier this week as he weighed whether McGee should be considered a juvenile or an adult. Robles will decide her sentence Friday.

The defense argues she should be required to receive psychological therapy because she is not fully aware of the crime she committed.

Prosecuters claim McGee planned to kill her mother and make it look like it was part of a robbery attempt. McGee’s doctors also stated she does not remember what happened the night she attacked her mother and sister.

If sentenced to prison, McGee could get up to 21 years behind bars.

The ABC-7 New Mexico Mobile Newsroom will continue its complete coverage of this case. Look for an update on Friday.
