Daw’s and Thomasville Home Furnishings closing, liquidation sale starts Thursday
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Borderland furniture superstore Daw's Home Furnishings will close operations soon.
The store first opened in 1951 as S.O.S TV & Appliance Company in Central El Paso. The store sold black-and-white televisions and appliances. It eventually started selling higher quality furniture.
The Daw family would consolidate their three locations and move to East El Paso. The company eventually became Daw's Home Furnishings. In 2000, the family added Thomasville Home Furnishings.
Now, the store specializes in selling living room furniture, bedroom sets, home accessories and kitchen tables.
Wade, Mark and Theresa Daw have recently been running the long-standing business.
"And it was obviously in our blood. It's something we enjoyed in and we all worked very well together. We're all very compatible as siblings," said Wade Daw, the vice-president of Daw's Home Furnishings.
He said the company has thrived because of their great customer service and wide product selection. They said throughout the years they have had many competitors, but have been able to adapt.
The siblings also attribute their success to their loyal customers.
"The clientele is amazing because we've been serving generations of families over, over the past decades. We are now serving fourth and fifth generations El Pasoans," Daw said.
Tens of thousands of shoppers have walked into the store.
"They start out as customers and they turn into friends and and they become like our extended family, he said"
The store has been around for 73 years. Wade Daw said while the store expanded so did the family. Now there are over 35 nieces and nephews, and most have been exposed to the business.
"We would run around here, playing around here, playing store with our dad and our uncles and aunts and also with our cousins that would come and visit a visit at the same time, too. And then, of course, just learning. I've worked in the warehouse. I worked in the cells. I worked in management," said Bryan Daw.
Wade Daw said company has always been successful. The family told ABC-7 they decided to close the store because the siblings are ready to retire.
"It's a hard thing to do and it hurts, but I think we can move," said Mark Daw, the vice president of the company.
The siblings say now it the right time to settle down and enjoy their big family. They also said there is no one in the family to take over the business.
"We do need several people to make it operate, and so we just don't have the manpower to continue, but the time is right for us to to move on. "
The family said while it is a sad time, they are still celebrating.
Daw tells ABC-7 the store has an entire warehouse of furniture to sell, and they will close down once all of the merchandise is gone.
The family also owns Thomasville Home Furnishings, which will also be closing.
The furniture store will begin their liquidation sale on Thursday November 9.
