Five More West Nile Cases Found In New Mexico

SANTA FE, N.M.(AP) – Five more New Mexicans have been diagnosed with West Nile virus infections.

That word Friday from the state’sDepartment of Health, which had been announcing new cases each Friday. The cases include an 11-year-old Curry County boy with meningitis, a 73-year-old Dona Ana County man with meningitis, a 72-year-old Dona Ana County woman with encephalitis.

Also, a 68-year-old Bernalillo County man with encephalitis and a 76-year-old San Juan County man with encephalitis and meningitis. The department says the Dona Ana County man and the Curry County boy have recovered, and the others are still hospitalized.

Encephalitis and meningitis can be complications of West Nile. New Mexico has reported 13 human cases of West Nile virus infections this year.
