Mexican Company Plans To Reopen N.M. Cheese Factory

HOBBS, N.M. (AP) – A Mexican dairy products producer plans to reopen a Lovington cheese factory that closed six months ago.

Lala plans to employ about 75 people at the factory. So says Bethe Cunningham, executive director for the Economic Development Corporation of Lea County.

Lala is based in Torreon, Coahuila. The company produces cheese, milk, fruit juices, cream, yogurt, butter and desserts. Dairy Farmers of America Incorporated shut down the factory earlier this year because it wasn’t turning a profit.

The closure left 61 people unemployed. The factory had been churning out 40 million pounds of 40-pound block cheddar cheese annually since it opened for business in 1995.
