NMSU Campus Police Investigate Student Rape

LAS CRUCES, NM — Medical crews took an NMSU studentto the hospital after she was raped in her campus apartment by an armed intruder, campus officials said.

The incident happened around 9:30 p.m.Wednesdayat the Vista del Monte Apartments. The victim had suffered from some undisclosed injuries, which officials said were not life-threatening.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5’9″ -5’10”, 180 lbs., dark hair and eyes, wearing a white long sleeve shirt, blue jeans, a mask and gloves.

Campus police said he was armed with a handgun during the attack, but did not fire any shots.

Extra police patrols were ordered for the campus overnight, officials said.

“We’ll provide more security and police in that area as well as the entire campus,” said Jaime Chavez, NMSU chief of police. “We are being supported by the administration and we have enhanced our man power. and we want to make sure that everybody understands that they need to be aware and use their own vigilance and be alert of any suspicious activity and alert the police immediately.”

News of the attack has left some students on campus unsettled, and they said they plan to take extra measures to stay safe. “I’llhave my pepper spray ready,” said Tracy Trinidad. “My roommate and I are making sure we’re only out at daylight if we’re out by ourselves.”

Anyone with information regarding this crime is asked to call the NMSU Police Department at (575) 646-3311. A reward of $1,000 has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect, police said.
