Congressmen Seek To Free Convicted Border Patrol Agents

EL PASO, Tx. – Thanks to a Texas Congressman, there is a new push to help free two El Paso Border Patrol agents.

Texas congressman Ted Poe hopes to keep agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean from going to prison. Mr. Ramos and Mr. Compean received more than ten years for shooting a drug smuggler near Fabens and not reporting it to supervisors per regulations.

In addition to Congressman Poe, ABC-7 has learned a group of 48 other congressmen sent a letter to President Bush.

The letter calls theformer agent’s conviction “a travesty of justice.” The letter goes on to state:

“We can think of nothing more immoral than to allow the lives and families of those who protect us to be destroyed by an overly aggressive and questionable prosecution by theUS Attorney’s Office.”

In the same letter to the House Immigration Subcommittee, the congressmen also call for an immediate hearing into the agents case.
