Man Shot And Killed Wife At Fort Bliss
The ABC-7 Newsroom has confirmed a husband shotand killed his wifeat Fort Bliss. According to a military spokeswoman, the shooting happened atthe Post Exchange storeon post a little before 5 Saturday afternoon.
The 19-year-old woman died and the man is at Thomason Hospital in critical condition. Officials say she was a soldier, and her husband is a civilian.
Investigatorsconfirm the husband tracked down his wife and shot her before attempting to take his own life at thePX store on post.
The sound of gun shots forced Fort Bliss officials to evacuate the store immediately, but it was too late for the female soldier, who died 45 minutes after shots rang out.
Her husband, the accused shooter, remains in intensive care at Thomason Hospital.
Several people witnessed the shooting.
“As you’ve probably seen, we have a sign on post that says weapons must be registered. Weapons must be registered on post. We have a very aggressive policy to weapons,” saidthe Garrison Commander, Col. Edward Manning.
Despite their vigilant stance, military officials say it’s possible the shooter, a military spouse, could have gone undetected.
Several witnesses who called the ABC-7 newsroom say the man and woman were arguing when he shot her and then shot himself.
Fort Bliss officials say the couple was from Washington State and had only recently moved to the area where she was just starting training.
They will not release either of their identities until their families are notified.
Officials are calling this an isolated incident and thus are not increasing security on Fort Bliss.
ThePX is expected to remain closed until their investigation is complete.
The FBI and Military Police are both investigating the shooting.
