Fire In San Elizario Leaves Family Homeless
El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a fire early Wednesday evening in San Elizario.
The deputies were dispatched around 7:10pm. When they arrived at 760 Herring off of Socorro Road, they found a white one-story structure home fully engulfed in flames, and they also noticed a television set inside the living room had been left on.
Authorities tried to make contact with the home’s resident, but no one answered the door. However, they soon met a 16-year-old girl who told them she lived at the home.
She told deputies she was watching television when she saw smoke and fire coming from the rear bedroom.
When she saw the smoke and flames, she said she immediately ran out the front door and went to a neighbor’s house to call 911.
Authorities said she was the only person inside the residence at the time of the fire.
Within minutes of the 911 call, firefighters from the San Elizario Volunteer Fire Department arrived and put out the flames after several minutes.
According to authorities, the homeowners did not have insurance, and the home was declared a total loss. The Red Cross was called to assist the family, a father and his four children.
Fire marshals determined the fire was not the result of arson, but started due to an electrical problem in the ceiling of the back room of the home.
