UTEP Spring 2010 Graduation Information

The University of Texas at El Paso is anticipating the largest spring commencement in the University?s 96-year history. In spring 2009, 2,474 students walked across the stage to receive their diplomas.

So far, 2,336 of the 2,549 graduating students have confirmed their participation in UTEP?s 124th Commencement and more are expected to register by the end of the week.

UTEP administrators congratulate members of the Class of 2010, whose hard work will be celebrated at three separate commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 15, at the Don Haskins Center on North Mesa Street.

Three Commencement ceremonies are scheduled as follows: The 9 a.m. ceremony will honor students in the College of Liberal Arts and University College.

The 2 p.m. ceremony will honor students in the College of Business Administration and College of Education.

The 7 p.m. ceremony will honor students in the College of Engineering, College of Science, College of Health Sciences and School of Nursing.

All ceremonies will include undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Commencement highlights:

For the first time, UTEP will broadcast commencement live on the internet. To view, visit www.utep.edu

Dennis Bush will become the first person to graduate with a Master of Fine Arts degree from UTEP?s online Bilingual Creative Writing Program.

Most of the students receiving Master of Physical Therapy degrees will have already begun the bridge program to the new Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, which started May 11. They will receive the DPT degrees in December and will be the first DPT program graduates.

The DPT received final approval in late April. It is one of 17 doctoral degree programs offered at UTEP, and more are in development.

Coverage on Commencement Day: Media parking is available in lot R-1 (Brumbelow Building lot on the corner of Glory Road and Randolph Drive). All media should enter the Don Haskins Center through the south tunnel.

Graduates will be available for media interviews 30 minutes before each ceremony in the Memorial Gymnasium (across from the Don Haskins Center) or following the ceremonies outside the Don Haskins Center. Interviews will not be allowed in the Don Haskins Center tunnel.

For the Public:

As the University honors its latest class of graduates, family and friends attending the ceremonies are encouraged to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony to ensure parking and avoid possible traffic congestion along Mesa Street, Schuster Avenue and Sun Bowl Drive.

General parking will be off of Sun Bowl Drive, north of Sun Bowl Stadium and Kidd Field. Parking lots for the event include R-2, R-3, R-4, R-5 (Rudolph Lot), P-8, and P-9 (Sun Bowl lots are accessible northbound from Sun Bowl Drive and southbound if exiting Executive Boulevard from I-10 exit).

Disabled Parking: R-3 (Disabled Parking Permit required).

Inner Campus parking spaces will be open to accommodate commencement attendees and campus guests.

The UTEP parking garage will be open for event guests and campus visitors. Traffic from the parking garage will run north and south on Sun Bowl Drive. Vehicles that exit Schuster Avenue to access the campus will have to travel east on Schuster and enter on Rim Road, Hawthorne Street or University Avenue.

Baby strollers, balloons, noise makers, glass containers and banners are not permitted in the Don Haskins Center.
