AIDS Cases On The Rise In El Paso

The number of new AIDS cases reported this year is sharply above how many were reported last year.

So far this year, there are 30 new AIDS cases reported to the Dept. of Health in El Paso compared to 19 in all of 2009.

The HIV prevention specialist for the department told ABC-7 that more young people have been testing positive for HIV and AIDS.

The city is trying to get the message about practicing safe sex out to the community through health fairs and even by passing out condoms at area bars. It appears it is not enough, the specialist said.

“We’re not inundated with messages the way we used to be in the 90s. And this feeling of invincibility that these kids have is contributing to these high numbers.” David Peralta-Torres, HIV Prevention Specialist for the El Paso Dept. of Health.

If you need to get tested, the Dept. of Health offers free screenings on Fridays from 8-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. at 5115 El Paso Drive. No appointment is needed.
