Berino, NM Mother Charged With Child Abuse

A Berino, New Mexico mother claims her one-year-old son fell off a bed and began having seizures, but Dona Ana County sheriff’s investigators say it’s a case of child abuse.

The baby was in a coma at University Medical Center in El Paso as of Saturday morning.

Authorities have charged 26-year-old Erica Sigala with intentional child abuse, resulting in death or great bodily harm.

UMC contacted Dona Ana County sheriff’s officials about the boy’s injuries; according to a New Mexico forensic pediatrician, the boy showed severe brain injuries.

When asked how his mother played with Jesus, Jr., his two-year-old brother reportedly shook a doll back and forth, according to court documents.

Sheriff’s officials say this is the third case of extreme child abuse in Dona Ana County in recent weeks.
