CNN Covers Local Reactions To Arizona’s New Immigration Law

The national spotlight is shining on El Paso as CNN crews were in the Sun City to gauge local reaction to the implementation this week of Arizona’s controversial immigration law SB 1070.

El Paso was the first stop on CNN En Espanol’s weeklong roadtrip. The crews’ bus tour spans more than 460 miles along major border cities with stops along the way to dig deeper into Arizona’s new immigration law.

“We decided to start this tour here in el paso because you can see the contrast of two cities,” said CNN Correspondent Gabriela Frias. “We’re gonna be gathering opinions of all sources: academics, experts, and people who might be affected by a law like the Arizona law. This is the heart of the trade between Mexico and the United States”

Trade tainted by the violence in Juarez.

“There is a very sharp contrast between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez,” Frias said. “‘Do you feel secure when you’re living next to the most violent city in mexico nowadays?'”

These correspondents are hoping to get answers from a border community that could have a lot at stake.

“The issues that the border is facing start in Texas,” CNN Correspondent Juan Carlos Lopez sad. “Depending on what happens in Arizona, we could be talking about measures in other states and that is scary to a lot of people.”

Which is why this crew is trying to see an issue of national interest through a local lens.

“It’s an interesting issue, and I hope we’re able to portray the story as El Pasoans see it and feel it,” Lopez said.

The next stop on CNN’s bus tour is right next door in Las Cruces. They’ll also be covering reactions to the controversial law in Nogales, Ariz. before their final stop on Phoenix on July 29, the very day SB 1070 goes into effect.
