UTEP Starting Wide Receiver Arrested On Family Violence Charge

UTEP starting senior wide receiver Evan Davis was arrested and charged with family violence early Tuesday morning following an altercation late Monday night with a woman who is believed to be his girlfriend in West El Paso.

According to an El Paso Police Department spokesman, the 22-year-old Davis got into a verbal altercation with the woman in an apartment in the 300 block of Shadow Mountain that resulted in him allegedly grabbing her by the wrist.

According to police, Davis let the woman go and she grabbed her phone. He then allegedly “tackled her and grabbed the phone and threw the phone.”

Davis has been charged with assault causing body injury/family violence, interference with emergency call, and failure to maintain financial responsibility. Details of the incident were not immediately available.

Davis was released from the El Paso County Downtown jail facility a few hours after being arrested.

Davis, who is from Los Angeles, started six games last season and played in all 12 for the Miners as a junior, catching 19 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown. As a sophomore in 2008, Davis, whose nickname is “Showtime,” caught 19 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown.

In 2010, UTEP football coach Mike Price has had to deal with a few discipline problems. Early this month, Price suspended starting cornerback Travaun Nixon and backup wide receiver Marlon McClure for violating unspecified team rules. Nixon will miss the first game of the season and McClure will miss the first two games of the season.

In March, Price suspended starting quarterback Trevor Vittatoe, wide receiver Pierce Hunter and offensive lineman Alex Solot from several practices during spring football for violating unspecified team rules. Their punishment was not being allowed in the weight room, on the sidelines or in the locker room and they were punished through physical activity, Price said at the time of their suspension.
