Bio from Website: Herb Gonzales was born August 20, 1958 in San Antonio, Texas, and is a life-long resident of Texas. He attended public schools in the San Antonio and South San Antonio Independent School Districts and graduated from South San Antonio High School in 1976. He was accepted to attend St. Mary’s University and graduated with a B.A. in Political Science in 1980. He was a member of the Mexican American Student Organization (MASO) and a founding member of the Political Science Honor Society. He supported and worked with La Raza Unida in 1977-78. He continued with post- graduate education until 1988. His studies concentrated in the area of politics and religion.
During the mid to late 80’s he was involved in the presidential campaigns of Jesse Jackson as a precinct coordinator and delegate to Texas Democrats County and State Conventions. He was a member of the Bexar County Progressive Democrats from 1991-1992. His last fling with Democrats was to be a precinct chair in 1992.
Herb heard of the Greens in the mid- 90’s and attended his first Green meeting in Oct. of 2000 and volunteered to work a voting site for the Greens. He has since voted Green in all Presidential elections and State elections.
His work experience begins while he was attending St. Mary’s and was employed at The San Antonio Children’s Center as a child-care worker with children and adolescents with severe mental disorders. This job led to employment with the Bexar County Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority (BCMHMRA) as a case manager for persons with profound mental disabilities. During his ten years at the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority he supported efforts to unionize the workers and is elected President. Four months after being elected his employer informs him that his work is unsatisfactory and he is fired. He continues to head the union and leads a struggle to expose Medicaid fraud and poor administration of the MHMR in Bexar County.
He has been employed as a customer service rep for ATT, a temp with ManPower, union organizer, probation officer, substitute teacher and has become a full-time stay at home parent for his two-year old son.
